One of the tough parts of living outside of New York City and in the middle of the country is that I don't get to listen to WFAN and hear the latest Mets news (unless I have my laptop with me). However, one of the cool things is that I get to listen to the opinions of other baseball fans around the country in my very own office. The current topic has lead me to utilize that ability and ask my office mates what they thought of the following comments from Mike Francesa. There is Mike (Cubs fan), John (Rangers), Sean (Red Soxs), Christina (crazy Astro's fan), and finally Michele (Kansas City Royals fan (my GF actually and I'm turning her into a Mets fan). Thanks to Metsblog for the quote!
“I don’t care if Billy Wagner did it in Houston and did it in Philly. Nobody knew he did it. The Mets announcers didn’t know it. No one in the stadium knew this was his song. Nobody in America knew this was his song. I know he has a relationship with Metallica, but i don’t care if he grew up and he was in the band. When you come to this town you cannot co-opt something, now that you’re a Met sometimes you’re gonna have to do a little changing, because you’re coming to a town where a guy has turned that song into an event…Point is, at Yankee Stadium this is a huge deal, this is symbolic, it’s known around baseball that this is a big deal. You can’t co-opt it. It’s lame. Find something else.”…

Mike's comments: "Is this guy serious? Does he realize that there is baseball beyond Yankee Stadium? I've had to deal with Wagner killing my Cubs for over 10 years and everybody knows that song is his. At any rate, who really cares?
John's comments: "I think this guy should worry more about the Yankee's end of the rotation than what song a Met's pitcher is coming into the game. Anyway, I've always known that is Wag's song. At first it wasn't, I forgot when he changed it but I believe it was towards the end of his first full season. This guy is an idiot."
Sean's comments: "Typical Yankee fan. Wait, this guy is on the radio? Well, it sound unprofessional to me. Frankly, the Yankee's should worry more about my Red Soxes now that Schilling is back! Anyway Steve, I hope your Mets kill them during the Sub Way series!"
Christina's comments: "I'm still pissed that he isn't on the team anymore. Can you imagine the combination of Wagner and Lidge! Anyway, this fool has no idea what he is talking about. Wagner is the man and he can use what ever song he wants. Besides, does that Rivera guy even speak English? Anyway, you guys have a hell of a closer. Keep those Braves out of the play offs for once!
Michele's comments: "I don't get it. It's just a song. Who really cares?"
Well there you have it folks. Apparently people did know that Wagner used this song all the time. In fact, the only one who I know of that didn't know it was, well, Mike Francesa. So much for being an expert to talk about sports. Anyway, if anything I find the whole thing to be rather silly. The only thing that should matter on WFAN is how well the team's are playing, not what songs are being played between innings.
