According to Mets.com, Orlando Hernandez is trying to make a quick come back to pitch for Game 1 on the World Series. Here is the interesting tidbit:
Via Mets.com (notes section):
Hernandez still believes the torn muscle in his right calf, the injury that has eliminated him from the first two postseason series, will heal enough by Oct. 21, the date of Game 1 of the World Series, to allow him to pitch in the Series
I'm not really sure how to look at this here. Obviously having a healthy Hernandez to pitch game 1 or game 2 of the World Series would be a huge boost. The addition would allow Glavine to be the second starter and push Maine and Trachsel to the back, where they should have been. This is a rotation that can get the Mets 6 solid innings for at least 3 of 4 starts. However, although Hernandez may be healed, will he be effective? We know that Hernandez took some time off in August and came back fine, but that was just a case of being tired. This was a significant injury to the calf and we wouldn't know how it will effect him with no starts to rehab from. I guess he wouldn't be any worse than Perez could be, but I'm still a little cautious here. Certainly, the return of El Duque for Game 1 of the World Series would be a huge moral boost to a team that's been hit with the injury bug.
We'll have to wait and see how this turns out. First, lets take care of the Cardinals tomorrow.
